- Walmart shopper says mirrors in stores are making young girls struggle with body image: “Why make the…” (marketrealist.com)
A TikTok user is raising concerns about distorted mirrors in a Walmart store, potentially contributing to body image issues in young girls. Jennifer Jordy (@jenniferdejordy) posted a video showing a mirror decorated with positive affirmations like “I am strong” and “I am amazing.” However, the mirror itself distorts reflections, making people appear larger than they are.
Jordy demonstrates the distortion in her video, expressing concern about the mirror’s placement in the girls’ section. She questions why a “fun house” mirror would be placed in an area targeted toward children, especially with body-positive messaging.
Commenters echoed Jordy’s concerns. One user pointed out that young girls might not understand the distortion and could internalize the altered image. Others agreed the mirror was inappropriate and should be a regular mirror.
Some commenters offered possible explanations, suggesting the mirror might be intended to help with body dysmorphia, similar to those used in some mental health facilities, or that it was simply a cheaply made product.
Body image issues and eating disorders are serious concerns, particularly among young people. So far, Walmart has not responded to the video or the concerns raised.
