Additional Coverage:

A Palm Beach County corrections officer was killed last night in what police are calling a targeted attack.

The shooting happened around 7:32 p.m. in Belle Glade. Deputies responded to reports of gunfire in the 1400 block of Northwest Avenue D.

The 39-year-old deputy was rushed to St. Mary’s Hospital, but unfortunately died shortly after arrival. The officer had been with the Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office for three years.

The Sheriff’s Office expressed their grief over the loss. They held a ceremonial escort Tuesday evening to honor the fallen officer.

The procession went from St. Mary’s Hospital to the Medical Examiner’s Office.

Authorities have not released details about the investigation or why they believe the attack was targeted. They say more information will be released as it becomes available. The investigation remains active and ongoing.
