Travel Writer Picks Top Three States to Live In

Additional Coverage:

As a travel writer, I’ve visited every state, but only a few feel like home. Three states stand out: New York, Wyoming, and Rhode Island.

New York City, my current home, is a true “city” city. I love the 24/7 energy, late-night options, and easy access to nearby getaways like Shelter Island and the Hamptons.

The convenience of two major international airports and the proximity to family and friends are also big draws. New York offers a vibrant, connected lifestyle that I cherish.

Wyoming offers a stark contrast. I’ve spent time in this least-populated state, finding peace in the vastness of Grand Teton National Park. The memories of writing, skiing, and enjoying sunsets with a bourbon still beckon.

Jackson Hole, Wyoming, is possibly the most beautiful place in the country. The mountains constantly call to me, and I could see myself returning permanently.

Finally, Rhode Island captures the essence of East Coast island life. I’ve enjoyed many summers on its Atlantic shores and can imagine living there year-round.

I’m drawn to New England’s rocky coastline and dramatic weather. The charming coastal towns, from Narragansett to Block Island, offer a unique appeal.

Aquidneck Island, with its mix of farmland and nightlife, is already a favorite summer escape. I hope to one day make the Ocean State my permanent home.
