Kansas City, MO – Andrew Lester, the man accused of shooting Ralph Yarl after the teenager mistakenly went to the wrong house, pleaded guilty to second-degree assault. The plea came during a brief court hearing on Friday.
Lester, 86, originally faced first-degree assault and armed criminal action charges. The charges stemmed from the April 2023 shooting of then-16-year-old Yarl, a Black honors student who had arrived at Lester’s door to pick up his younger brothers.
The second-degree assault charge carries a potential sentence of up to seven years. Sentencing is scheduled for March 7, according to Clay County Prosecutor Zach Thompson.
Lester, who is white, shot Yarl in the head and arm. He claimed he believed someone was attempting to break into his home. He initially pleaded not guilty and was released on bond.
Thompson stated his office maintained consistent communication with Yarl’s family, and they supported the resolution. However, reports from the news conference indicated the family expressed dissatisfaction with the plea deal. Thompson acknowledged their frustration while reiterating his belief that the plea deal represents a just outcome.
Yarl, who has since graduated high school, suffered a traumatic brain injury from the shooting, impacting his academic performance.
Yarl’s family released a statement expressing their hope for a sentence that reflects the gravity of Lester’s actions. They emphasized the need for consequences beyond a “slap on the wrist.”
Lester’s attorney previously cited his client’s declining health as a factor in the case, leading to trial postponements. Lester appeared in court in a wheelchair for Friday’s hearing.
A civil lawsuit filed by Yarl’s family against Lester and the homeowners association remains pending. The suit alleges a lack of progress in the case and failure to provide aid after the shooting.
