Tiny Home Living Leads to Clutter-Free Life

Additional Coverage:

Local resident Jackie Lam downsized from a 500-square-foot apartment to a 325-square-foot tiny home six years ago after her rent-controlled building was sold. The move forced her to pare down her belongings significantly, including furniture, books, and her record collection. While she sometimes considers a larger space, she appreciates how her tiny home encourages a minimalist lifestyle.

Lam now declutters regularly to prevent accumulation. After struggling to find items, she hired a professional organizer who helped her create more visible storage solutions using clear containers. The organizer also suggested using opaque bags for unwanted clothes, making it easier to donate them.

Lam follows a “one in, one out” rule: when she buys something new, she removes a similar item. She often gives away unwanted items through a local gifting group.

Living small has also impacted her hobbies. After unsuccessfully trying to cram a drum kit, piano, and YouTube studio into her home, Lam became more realistic about her space and time. She now declines offers for items like a neighbor’s guitar, knowing she lacks the space and time to use them.

To avoid stress shopping, Lam focuses on buying groceries rather than accumulating more possessions. She also avoids browsing online retailers while working. Lam says her tiny home has finally helped her achieve the minimalist lifestyle she always wanted.
