Six Reasons I Stopped Eating at Cracker Barrel

Additional Coverage:

I used to be a huge fan of Cracker Barrel. The extensive menu and the attached gift shop were big draws. However, several factors have led me to dine there much less frequently.

First, the wait times can be excessive. There’s no reservation system, so you’re often left waiting for a table, especially when hungry. The gift shop full of candy doesn’t help with the hunger pangs either.

Second, the cost is a significant deterrent. The tempting menu often leads to overspending, and the final bill can be a shock. Even the CEO has acknowledged that rising costs are impacting customer traffic.

Third, Cracker Barrel’s history is marred by various scandals. Allegations of racism, including a noose reportedly displayed in one restaurant and lawsuits alleging discriminatory practices, have tarnished the chain’s image. Other lawsuits involving customer complaints and employee wage disputes have also surfaced.

Fourth, there are simply better options available. Many comparable restaurants offer similar comfort food at more reasonable prices. Local diners and established chains provide a variety of alternatives.

Fifth, the calorie counts at Cracker Barrel are alarming. Many dishes pack over half a day’s recommended caloric intake.

This can contribute to weight gain and other health issues. Several menu items exceed 1,000 calories per serving.

Finally, the sodium content is equally concerning. Numerous dishes contain over 2,000 milligrams of sodium, approaching or exceeding the recommended daily limit.

Excessive sodium intake can lead to high blood pressure and other health problems. Some Cracker Barrel meals contain over a day’s worth of sodium in a single serving.
