Additional Coverage:

North Korea has pledged to expand its nuclear arsenal, condemning the United States, South Korea, and Japan for their denuclearization efforts. The North Korean foreign ministry called the joint plan “outdated and absurd,” and promised a forceful response to any perceived threats.

An unnamed spokesperson for the ministry stated that North Korea’s nuclear weapons are a necessary defense of peace and sovereignty, guaranteed by the nation’s constitution. During a security conference in Germany, these officials reaffirmed their commitment to North Korea’s denuclearization and upholding existing sanctions. They also agreed to strengthen their defense cooperation, which includes increased joint military exercises.

Trump’s previous meetings with Kim Jong Un, including a historic step into North Korean territory from the demilitarized zone, underscore his unique approach to the complex relationship.
