Kansas City, MO – Andrew Lester, the man who shot teenager Ralph Yarl last year, has died awaiting sentencing. Clay County Prosecutor Zachary Thompson confirmed Lester’s death on Wednesday, offering condolences to his family.

Lester, 86, pleaded guilty last week to second-degree felony assault. He shot Yarl, who is Black, after the teen mistakenly went to the wrong address to pick up his younger brothers.

The shooting sparked national outrage and discussions about race and gun violence. Yarl suffered a traumatic brain injury.

Lester claimed he thought someone was breaking into his home. He was originally charged with first-degree assault and armed criminal action. He faced up to seven years in prison for the second-degree assault charge.

Sentencing was scheduled for March 7. With Lester’s death, the legal proceedings are now concluded.

The Yarl family released a statement expressing mixed emotions. They said justice was not served and they remain committed to fighting for a world free from racial bias and violence. The family previously stated they were unhappy with the plea deal.
