Five Foods That May Help With Diabetes

Diabetes makes it hard for the body to manage blood sugar. While there’s no cure, type 2 diabetes can often be managed and even reversed through lifestyle changes, especially diet. Registered dietitian and diabetes expert Charmaine Ha Dominguez recommends five foods to help reverse diabetes.

Seaweed is low in calories and carbs but high in fiber, which is beneficial for blood sugar control. It’s also a good source of iodine, supporting thyroid health.

Asparagus is another excellent choice. It’s packed with fiber and antioxidants and has a low glycemic index, meaning it won’t cause rapid blood sugar spikes. It’s also a convenient and easy-to-prepare vegetable.

Cherries are a sweet treat that can actually help manage diabetes. They’re rich in anthocyanins, which may improve insulin sensitivity and reduce inflammation. Dominguez notes they’re also good for sleep.

Garbanzo beans, also known as chickpeas, are full of fiber, protein, and healthy fats. The fiber helps prevent blood sugar spikes, while the protein and fats contribute to overall health.

Finally, Brussels sprouts are a nutritional powerhouse. They contain vitamins C and K, folate, and antioxidants.

These nutrients can help reduce inflammation and oxidative stress, both of which are linked to insulin resistance. They also contain alpha-lipoic acid, which may help lower blood sugar.
