Pope’s Health Takes Serious Turn

Additional Coverage:

Pope Francis is in critical condition at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital after suffering a respiratory crisis. The Vatican reported he received oxygen and, according to other sources, needed blood transfusions due to a low platelet count.

While the Vatican says the Pope is alert, he is experiencing more pain than the previous day and his prognosis remains uncertain. Medical professionals indicate he is not in immediate danger of death, but also not out of danger.

Hospitalization is expected to last at least through next week. There is concern about a potential sepsis infection.

A medical analyst, Dr. Marc Siegel, is closely monitoring the situation over the next crucial 12 hours.

He noted the Pope’s history of bronchitis and airway problems make pneumonia a common complication. While acknowledging the seriousness, Dr.

Siegel expressed optimism.

The Pope was absent from Holy Year celebrations and will not make public appearances this Sunday. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed President Trump is aware of the Pope’s condition and offered prayers.

The 88-year-old pontiff was admitted to the hospital on February 14th with respiratory problems initially believed to be bronchitis, later diagnosed as double pneumonia. He has a history of respiratory issues, including having part of a lung removed in his youth. In his autobiography, Pope Francis downplayed his health concerns, attributing them to age.
