Timothée Chalamet, 29, scored his first major acting award Sunday night, winning the SAG Award for best actor. He portrayed Bob Dylan in “A Complete Unknown.”
While Chalamet’s performance has garnered praise, Adrien Brody has consistently outpaced him this awards season. Brody, star of “The Brutalist,” has won the Golden Globe, BAFTA, and Critics Choice Award.
Brody remains the Oscar frontrunner. However, Chalamet’s SAG win, voted on by fellow actors, could signal an upset. The actors’ branch is the Academy’s largest voting bloc.
A visibly moved Chalamet described the five-and-a-half year journey of portraying Dylan. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to play “an incomparable artist, a true American hero.” He thanked his co-stars and his mother, a 40-year veteran of Actors’ Equity.
Chalamet spoke candidly about his ambition. He admitted his “pursuit of greatness,” drawing inspiration from acting legends and athletes alike. He views the award as “fuel” to continue striving for excellence.
Chalamet’s fellow nominees included Daniel Craig, Colman Domingo, and Ralph Fiennes. He has received several SAG nominations in the past, both individually and as part of a cast.
This win is a significant milestone for the young actor. He even joked about his awards-show losing streak while hosting a recent late-night show.
The upcoming Oscars are now a toss-up. Chalamet is competing against Brody, Domingo, Fiennes, and Sebastian Stan. A win would make Chalamet the youngest recipient of the Best Actor Oscar, a title currently held by Brody.
