Vatican Holds Nightly Prayers for Pope

Additional Coverage:

Vatican City — Pope Francis remains in critical but stable condition as of Tuesday evening. His blood parameters are stable as he continues to work from the hospital while recovering from double pneumonia.

A follow-up CAT scan was performed Tuesday evening to monitor the lung infection, but results were not yet available. Doctors reported no further respiratory crises and stated his prognosis remains guarded.

Despite his condition, the Pope resumed work activities Tuesday morning after receiving communion. Earlier reports indicated he was able to eat breakfast unassisted and get out of bed.

The Pope’s schedule included a meeting with Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, and Archbishop Edgar Peña Parra, the Vatican chief of staff. This marked his first meeting with Parolin since his hospitalization.

During the meeting, Pope Francis approved decrees for two new saints and advanced five individuals toward beatification. He also called for a consistory to discuss future canonizations. While such decisions are routine, the timing highlights the Pope’s commitment to his duties.

No date has been set for the consistory. Interestingly, it was at a similar meeting in 2013 that Pope Benedict XVI announced his resignation.

In another sign of looking ahead, the Vatican released the Pope’s message for Lent. Additional bulletins announced new bishop appointments and modifications to Vatican City State law.

Tuesday morning’s update indicated the Pope slept well. Monday’s update reported a slight improvement in some lab results. He has reportedly resumed work from his hospital room, even calling a parish in Gaza City.

Thousands gathered in St. Peter’s Square Tuesday evening for a Rosary recitation, evoking memories of similar vigils during Pope John Paul II’s final days. Cardinal Parolin led the prayer, asking for a swift recovery.

The Pope’s health is considered delicate due to his age, previous lung surgery, and existing lung disease. While Monday’s update reported no new respiratory crises and a reduction in supplemental oxygen, the overall mood remains serious.

Visitors to St. Peter’s Square expressed concern and admiration for the Pope.

Many reflected on his legacy and offered prayers for his recovery. The gathering was a diverse representation of the global Catholic community.

Expressions of concern and prayer have come from people of all faiths, both within Rome and around the world.
