Matthews Woman Accused of Locking Boyfriend in Storage Unit
A Matthews woman has been arrested and charged with attempted murder and kidnapping after allegedly locking her boyfriend in a storage unit for several days.
According to Monroe Police, 52-year-old Robin Deaton lured her 51-year-old boyfriend into the storage unit under the pretense of retrieving an item. Once he was inside, police say Deaton shut the door, securing it with two locks, and reportedly told the victim, “This is what you get.”
The victim was trapped inside the unit without food, water, or power. After several days, he was able to locate his cell phone and call 911.
In the chilling call released by Union County Emergency Services, the man can be heard pleading for help, stating he was struggling to breathe and hadn’t had anything to drink. He also expressed concern that his phone battery was dying.
Monroe Police officers responded to the Cooper Storage facility around 1:15 p.m. on Monday and rescued the man, who was then transported to a local hospital. He has since been released.
While the initial incident report listed the crime as false imprisonment, detectives pursued more serious charges against Deaton based on their investigation, leading to her arrest on Thursday following a brief manhunt. She is currently being held in jail.
