Shopper Beware: Walmart’s Scan-and-Go Glitch Adds $60 to Bill

A Walmart shopper is warning others after a new scan-and-go feature reportedly added $60 to her bill. TikTok user Tonya P. noticed the discrepancy after her total seemed unusually high.

A fellow customer then scanned her items at a traditional self-checkout, revealing the $60 overcharge. The incident, shared in a now-viral TikTok video, has sparked outrage and concern as other shoppers report similar overcharging experiences at Walmart.

The video’s release coincides with growing customer complaints about rising prices at Walmart, particularly for eggs. Some customers have even resorted to theft due to the soaring costs. One customer on X shared a photo of a 60-pack of eggs priced at $43 in Bakersfield, California, expressing frustration over the exorbitant cost.

Walmart CEO Doug McMillon has acknowledged the egg shortage and price hikes, assuring customers that the situation will eventually stabilize. The company has implemented purchase limits on eggs due to ongoing bird flu outbreaks affecting supply chains.

Currently, Walmart shoppers are limited to two 60-count cartons of eggs per visit. This issue extends beyond Walmart, with Costco customers also facing high egg prices and empty shelves.

According to the Consumer Price Index, the national average price for a dozen Grade A eggs reached $4.95 in January 2025, more than double the average price in August 2023. Egg inflation is a significant contributor to rising food costs, accounting for two-thirds of last month’s grocery price increases, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The high cost of eggs is impacting consumer habits, with many reducing their egg consumption or finding alternative meal options. Experts warn that other breakfast staples could face similar price increases as supply chain disruptions persist.
