Oscar In Memoriam Segment Stirs Controversy Again
The Oscars’ In Memoriam segment, intended to honor Hollywood figures who passed away in the last year, has once again sparked debate and disappointment among viewers. While the montage is a moving tribute, its limited time means not everyone can be included, leading to inevitable omissions that often draw criticism.
This year, fans were particularly upset by the absence of several notable names. The most discussed omission was Michelle Trachtenberg, the 39-year-old actress known for her roles in “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Harriet the Spy,” who sadly passed away recently. Adding to the confusion, actor Gene Hackman, whose death was announced after Trachtenberg’s, was included in the segment.
Other prominent actors missing from the tribute included Tony Todd (“Candyman”), Shannen Doherty (“Beverly Hills, 90210” and “Heathers”), Bernard Hill (“Titanic” and “Lord of the Rings”), and Olivia Hussey (“Black Christmas” and the 1968 adaptation of “Romeo and Juliet”).
The selection process for the In Memoriam segment remains somewhat shrouded in mystery. A confidential executive committee, composed of members from each of the Academy’s 19 branches, makes the final decisions.
Factors like Academy Awards wins, nominations, and contributions to film (as opposed to television or other mediums) are reportedly considered, although the specific criteria remain subjective. This explains why a well-known actor might be excluded while a less recognizable cinematographer is included.
