One Canned Stew Gets Thumbs Down From Local Reviewer

Additional Coverage:

Lazy weeknight dinners just got a whole lot easier thanks to this canned beef stew taste test! I put four popular brands head-to-head – Progresso, Campbell’s, Rao’s, and Dinty Moore – to find out which one reigns supreme. To make things interesting (and more substantial!), I jazzed up each stew with small noodles, green onions, and a dash of salt.

First up was Progresso’s Beef Pot Roast with Country Vegetables. This one was a hearty contender packed with tender meat and veggies, plus potatoes that offered a satisfying bite.

The broth, especially with my added green onions, was a real winner. While it was a bit too filling for me, I’d definitely call it a solid option.

Next, I cracked open a can of Campbell’s Chunky Beef Soup with Country Vegetables. Sadly, this one fell a bit flat.

The tomato flavor in the broth was overpowering, and the overall stew lacked the heartiness of Progresso. Even with my added noodles and salt, it just didn’t quite hit the mark.

Rao’s Slow-Simmered Tuscan-Style Beef Soup (which, technically, came in a jar) was a pleasant surprise. Despite an initial whiff of tomato, the flavor was surprisingly balanced.

I appreciated the unexpected addition of mushrooms and the home-cooked vibe thanks to the garlic and onion notes. However, the small pieces of meat and veggies got a little lost in the broth, so a side of bread or extra noodles would be a good idea.

Finally, we come to Dinty Moore. This stew was a flavor bomb!

The thick broth, packed with tender meat, carrots, and potatoes, was incredibly satisfying. It had a hint of tomato, but not nearly as overpowering as Campbell’s.

This one was a clear winner for its rich flavor and hearty texture.

So, after a thorough taste test, Dinty Moore takes the crown! While I enjoyed Rao’s and Progresso, Dinty Moore’s robust flavor and filling consistency made it my top choice for a quick and easy weeknight meal.
