Roy Ayers, the iconic vibraphonist whose infectious music spanned generations and genres, passed away on March 4, 2025, in New York City. He was 84.

His family confirmed the news on social media, stating that Ayers died after a long illness. They requested privacy during this difficult time but indicated a celebration of his life would be planned.

Born in Los Angeles in September 1940, Ayers was immersed in music from a young age. He often spoke of music’s profound impact on his life, describing it as “an escape when there is no escape.”

In a 2011 interview, he recounted a pivotal childhood moment when, at age 5, he received his first set of mallets from the renowned vibraphonist Lionel Hampton. Ayers believed Hampton imparted a “spiritual vibe” that day, foreshadowing his own future with the instrument.

He began playing the vibraphone at 17, a passion that continued throughout his life.

Ayers’ career spanned over six decades, beginning with his 1963 debut album, “West Coast Vibes.” He went on to release numerous influential records, including “Virgo Vibes” and “Stoned Soul Picnic.”

A pioneer of jazz-funk, his music has been widely sampled and continues to inspire. Ayers also collaborated with a diverse range of artists, from R&B icons like Alicia Keys, Erykah Badu, and Mary J.
