Meghan Markle’s Netflix lifestyle show, “With Love, Meghan,” has been met with harsh criticism. The show, which premiered in March, currently holds a 33% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Critics have questioned the show’s authenticity, with some suggesting Markle appears self-absorbed. Royal expert Kinsey Schofield, host of the “To Di For Daily” podcast, commented on Markle’s interactions with her guests, including actress and producer Mindy Kaling.
“She appears totally self-consumed and tone deaf,” Schofield stated. “You’re standing next to Mindy Kaling, and you’re not asking her how she built her girl boss empire?
Why?”
Another point of contention arose when Markle corrected Kaling for referring to her by her maiden name. This exchange further fueled criticism of the show’s perceived lack of authenticity.
Royal photographer Helena Chard noted that while Markle’s guests “glorify” her, the Duchess doesn’t reciprocate. “It would do Meghan’s character wonders if she changed things up by focusing and lifting her guests for a change,” Chard commented.
The show’s production has also been described as “bland, staged and stilted,” with criticism directed at the “unoriginal and basic” cooking and hosting tips. While Markle filmed the show at a rented estate, rather than her own home, a second season, already filmed, is slated for release this fall.
“With Love, Meghan” is the latest offering from the multiyear Netflix deal Markle and Prince Harry signed in 2020. Their previous project, the documentary “Polo,” was also poorly received, drawing comparisons to “With Love, Meghan” for its perceived lack of authenticity. Despite negative reviews, Markle celebrated the show’s initial placement in Netflix’s Top 10.
