Luxembourg’s Prince Frederik Remembered for His Spirit and Advocacy

Filmmaker Mei Fa Tan recently shared her heartfelt memories of working with Luxembourg’s Prince Frederik, who tragically passed away at the young age of 22 after battling PolG Mitochondrial disease. In an exclusive interview, Tan offered a glimpse into Frederik’s character, highlighting his intellectual curiosity, resilience, and dedication to raising awareness about the rare disease that ultimately claimed his life.

Tan collaborated with Frederik on a short film for The POLG Foundation, an organization co-founded by Frederik and his parents, Prince Robert and Princess Julie, to support research and find a cure for the debilitating illness. The film, released in 2024, features Frederik and other young people living with PolG.

Tan described Frederik as deeply engaged and eager to discuss a wide range of topics, particularly film and music. She was struck by his positive attitude and unwavering spirit despite the physical limitations imposed by his illness.

“He would love to talk about basically anything,” Tan shared. “But his body would not allow him to do as much.

So that was really painful to watch because he was trying his best.” She recalled moments when Frederik struggled with simple tasks, yet always maintained his dignity and sense of humor.

The filmmaker also noted the poignant contrast between Frederik’s youthful aspirations and the harsh realities of his condition. The film opens with footage of Frederik as a child, highlighting the activities he could no longer enjoy.

“When you’re a kid, you’ve got all these dreams,” Frederik narrates in the film. “I’m not sure I understood all the consequences of PolG…slowly, the world is getting smaller and smaller.”

Tan admitted she was deeply moved by Frederik’s story, recognizing the profound loss of a life brimming with potential.

Despite the film’s serious subject matter, Tan described a positive and light atmosphere on set, commending the bravery and resilience of all the young participants. She emphasized Frederik’s courage and determination to make a difference in the face of adversity, leaving a lasting legacy of hope and inspiration.
