La Malbaie, Quebec—Tensions flared at the G7 summit in La Malbaie on Friday as US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly engaged in a heated exchange over President Trump’s apparent ambitions to annex Canada. Joly delivered a firm rebuke to Rubio, stating unequivocally, “Canada’s sovereignty is not up for debate. Period.”

Joly later described the conversation as “frank,” confirming that the discussion also touched upon ongoing trade tensions and tariffs. She reiterated her message to both Rubio and President Trump: “You are here.

You respect us. You respect our sovereignty.

You respect our people. Period.”

Joly emphasized Canada’s historical reasons for independence, highlighting the close bonds between Canadians and their distinct identity.

While Rubio reportedly downplayed Trump’s comments as mere musings, Joly revealed that some international attendees perceived the remarks as a joke. She stressed the seriousness of the situation, stating, “This is not a joke — Canadians are anxious, Canadians are proud people.” German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock expressed support for Canada on social media, posting a message of solidarity.

Joly’s early departure from the summit to attend the swearing-in of new Prime Minister Mark Carney further underscored the tense atmosphere. Trade tariffs imposed by the US loomed large over the summit, prompting discussions on mitigating their economic impact. Joly called for the removal of interprovincial trade barriers within Canada and emphasized the country’s pursuit of diversified trade partnerships with Europe and Britain.
