New Director to Reboot Classic Sci-Fi Film

Additional Coverage:

Sci-fi fans, get ready! A new take on Starship Troopers is in the works, helmed by Neill Blomkamp, the director who brought us the critically acclaimed District 9.

While the 30th anniversary of Paul Verhoeven’s satirical cult classic is just around the corner in 2027, this reboot aims to go back to the source material – Robert A. Heinlein’s 1959 novel.

Blomkamp, along with his wife and frequent collaborator, Terri Tatchell, will write and produce the film for Sony Pictures. This marks a departure from Verhoeven’s satirical approach, which is somewhat surprising given the satirical elements present in Blomkamp’s own work.

While Blomkamp’s District 9, Elysium, and Chappie have all explored sci-fi themes, this new project offers a fresh opportunity after his previously planned sequels for Alien and RoboCop failed to launch. He most recently directed Gran Turismo, a film loosely based on the true story of a gamer turned professional race car driver.

Despite a lukewarm box office reception back in 1997, the original Starship Troopers gained a cult following and spawned several direct-to-video sequels and even a video game. This reboot hopes to recapture the magic, albeit with a different approach. No release date has been announced yet by Sony.
