Europe Through My Eyes: Hits and Misses
Over the past few years, I’ve made Europe my temporary home, seizing every opportunity to explore its diverse cities. From the charming streets of Prague to the sun-kissed beaches of Hvar, Croatia, my adventures have been filled with unforgettable moments. But as with any journey, not every destination has lived up to the hype.
Cities I’d Revisit in a Heartbeat:
- Faro, Portugal: This Algarve gem offers a winning combination of stunning beaches, unique architecture, and a laid-back vibe. A highlight was the unforgettable hour-long cliff walk with a friend, culminating in the discovery of a secluded beach – a truly magical experience.
- Reykjavik, Iceland: Yes, Iceland has a reputation for being expensive, but Reykjavik’s charm and walkability make it worth every penny. The local cuisine, particularly the seafood and lamb, was exceptional. But the true magic lies in the spontaneous moments, like witnessing the Northern Lights dance across the sky after a night of karaoke.
- Hvar, Croatia: For beach lovers, Croatia is a dream, and Hvar is the crown jewel. Picture this: charming cobblestone streets, fantastic restaurants, and pristine beaches with crystal-clear waters.
Venturing out to the smaller surrounding islands offers even more secluded relaxation. My trip to Hvar even included a step outside my comfort zone with a visit to a nude beach, leading to new friendships with fellow adventurers.
- Prague, Czech Republic: Prague’s fairytale architecture, vibrant nightlife, and rich history captivated me. Wandering through Old Town Square felt like stepping back in time.
And let’s not forget the food – goulash and trdelník are a must-try. Even after a few days, I felt like I had only scratched the surface of this enchanting city.
Cities I Might Skip Next Time:
- Marseille, France: While France is renowned for its beauty and culture, Marseille fell a bit flat for me. The city’s architecture is impressive, but it lacked a unique spark.
Be prepared for a workout, as Marseille’s hilly terrain can make exploring a bit tiring. Next time, I’d opt for nearby gems like Aix-en-Provence or Nice.
- Stockholm, Sweden: Despite high expectations, Stockholm left me underwhelmed. The city is undeniably beautiful, with its waterways and historic buildings, but it lacked the vibrant energy I craved. Having explored other Nordic cities, Stockholm felt a bit monotonous in comparison.
