The Vivienne, known offstage as James Lee Williams, passed away earlier this year at the age of 32. The cause of death has now been confirmed as cardiac arrest brought on by ketamine use.
The news was released by Williams’ manager and friend, Simon Jones, in a statement to Attitude magazine. Jones expressed his hope that by sharing this information, greater awareness can be raised about the dangers of ketamine, particularly amongst young people.
Williams’ passing in January prompted an outpouring of grief and tributes. At the time of his death, Jones described Williams as “an incredibly loved, warm-hearted and amazing individual,” noting the family’s devastation at the loss of their son, brother, and uncle. He also celebrated Williams’ talent and comedic brilliance.
Just weeks before his death, Williams had reflected on a successful 2024 and expressed excitement for the year ahead. His last social media post encouraged support for a Liverpool-based LGBTQ+ charity. He was actively involved in musical theatre and had various projects planned for 2025.
