Dollar General to Shutter Nearly 150 Stores
America’s ubiquitous dollar store, Dollar General, is shrinking its footprint. With over 20,000 locations nationwide, the discount retailer recently announced plans to close nearly 150 stores.
Why the Downsizing?
According to the company’s financial report, Dollar General launched a “store portfolio optimization review” late last year. This review, coupled with a reported 49.2% decrease in fourth-quarter operating profit for 2024, led to the decision to close underperforming stores and re-evaluate operating conditions. Essentially, it boils down to a business decision.
How Many and What Kind of Stores?
Ninety-six Dollar General stores will be closing. Additionally, 45 Popshelf stores, a Dollar General-owned brand focusing on home goods and party supplies, will also shutter.
Currently, there are approximately 220 Popshelf locations across 21 states. Interestingly, six Popshelf locations will be converted into Dollar General stores.
Which Locations Are Affected?
The company has not yet disclosed which specific stores will be closing, but more information is expected soon.
When Will the Closures Happen?
While an exact date hasn’t been announced, Dollar General indicated the closures will occur during the first fiscal quarter of this year. Since the company’s fiscal year begins in February, closures are likely to happen by the end of April 2025.
Retail Woes Not Unique to Dollar General
Dollar General isn’t alone in facing recent challenges. Several other retailers have also announced closures, including craft store Joann, which closed all locations permanently after two bankruptcy filings, and Party City, which ceased operations at the end of last year. Other businesses like Big Lots, Red Robin, Walgreens, and Advanced Auto Parts have also recently shuttered locations.
