SSA Announces New In-Person Identity Verification Procedures
The Social Security Administration (SSA) announced new identity verification procedures to protect against fraud. Starting March 31, individuals applying for benefits or changing direct deposit information who cannot verify their identity online via their “my Social Security” account will need to do so in person at a local SSA office.
While benefit claims can still be initiated over the phone, they will not be processed until identity is confirmed in person. The SSA recommends scheduling an appointment to avoid potential delays. Direct deposit changes, previously subject to a 30-day waiting period, will now be processed within one business day.
These changes aim to enhance security and expedite service, according to Acting Commissioner Lee Dudek, who highlighted the need to modernize the agency’s identity verification methods. Individuals without a “my Social Security” account are encouraged to create one to manage their benefits online. This shift to stronger identity proofing will occur over the next two weeks, culminating in the full implementation of the new procedures by March 31st.
