Americans on the Move: Where Are They Going, and Where Are They Leaving?
Moving can be one of life’s most stressful events, ranking up there with major life changes like divorce or job loss. With so many factors to consider, it’s no wonder people carefully weigh their options when relocating, especially across state lines.
So, where are Americans migrating in 2024? Here’s a look at the top 10 states people are leaving, and the top 10 states attracting new residents.
Exodus: Top 10 States People Are Leaving
Some states are seeing a significant outflow of residents. New Hampshire tops the list with a staggering 34.3% net moving loss, and the high average moving cost of $507 adds insult to injury.
The nation’s capital, Washington D.C., also experienced a substantial exodus, with a 24.8% net population loss. Other states experiencing significant population declines include New Mexico (21.2%), Arizona (21%), Montana (20.8%), Oklahoma (20.2%), Connecticut (19.4%), Maryland (14.8%), West Virginia (14.6%), and Utah (14.6%).
While some of these states offer lower moving costs than the national average of $400, other factors seem to be driving residents away.
New Horizons: Top 10 States People Are Moving To
While some states are experiencing an outflow, others are magnets for newcomers. Vermont leads the pack, boasting a significant influx of new residents, although with a steep average moving cost of $846.
Delaware follows closely behind with a 37.1% net population gain. Hawaii, with its allure of beaches and tropical climate, saw a 20.4% increase in residents.
Other states experiencing growth include Oregon, Georgia (15.6%), North Dakota (almost 15%), Alaska (14.7%), Missouri (13.9%), Nebraska (13.6%), and Washington. These states offer diverse attractions, from natural beauty and outdoor recreation to robust job markets and lower costs of living.
While moving costs vary, the unique advantages of each state seem to outweigh the financial burden for many new residents.
