Utah Senator Sounds Alarm on GOP Deception Regarding Social Security
A Republican senator has issued a stark warning to the American public: the GOP is not being truthful about its plans for Social Security. Senator John Curtis (R-UT) expressed deep concerns about potential cuts and changes to the vital program, which supports 70 million Americans. His warning comes amidst growing anxieties surrounding the Trump administration’s reduced funding for the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), now headed by Elon Musk.
The administration has already initiated a crackdown on identity verification procedures, impacting vulnerable populations like the elderly and those in rural communities. Some beneficiaries report their payments have already been abruptly halted. While the White House insists it will protect the program, it admits DOGE may implement cuts to eliminate perceived “waste.”
Senator Curtis, speaking on NBC’s Meet the Press, stated frankly, “We’re not being honest with people.” He accused fellow Republicans of misleading the public with promises not to “touch” Social Security.
Curtis worries this dishonesty will further erode public trust in the party. “I think that makes them not trust us when we say something that they just know is not true,” he explained.
DOGE head Elon Musk has been a vocal critic of Social Security, calling it a “Ponzi scheme” and targeting it for elimination to reduce government spending. Both Musk and President Trump have also promoted unsubstantiated claims about widespread fraud involving beneficiaries falsely claiming benefits for deceased centenarians.
Senator Curtis urged lawmakers to address the issue swiftly to avoid more severe consequences down the line. “If we don’t do it,” he cautioned, “we have worse decisions thrust upon us.”
