Disney’s Live-Action “Snow White” Stumbles at the Box Office

Disney’s latest live-action remake, “Snow White,” faced a disappointing opening weekend, earning $43 million domestically and $44 million internationally. Directed by Marc Webb and starring Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot, the film’s performance pales in comparison to other recent Disney remakes.

The 2019 “Dumbo” remake brought in $119 million domestically during its opening weekend, while 2023’s “The Little Mermaid” earned $117.5 million. Despite outperforming newcomers like “Black Bag” and “Mickey 17,” “Snow White” fell short of expectations, especially considering its reported production budget exceeding $250 million.

The film’s release has been plagued by controversy, potentially impacting its box office performance. Casting choices, particularly Rachel Zegler as Snow White, sparked debate, as did Zegler’s public criticism of the original animated film.

The portrayal of the seven dwarfs also drew criticism, with some questioning the diverse casting and others, including actor Peter Dinklage, suggesting their removal altogether. Adding to the pre-release turmoil were differing political stances on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict between Zegler and Gadot, further fueling online discussions.

Disney has not yet commented on the film’s performance or the surrounding controversies.
