Greenland PM Slams Second Lady’s Visit as “Aggressive Provocation”
Greenland’s Prime Minister Mute Egede has sharply criticized Second Lady Usha Vance’s upcoming trip to Greenland, labeling it a dangerous and “very aggressive” provocation. The White House announced Thursday that Vance, accompanied by one of her sons, National Security Advisor Michael Waltz, and a U.S. delegation, will visit historical sites, experience Greenlandic heritage, and attend the national dogsled race.
Egede, in an interview with Greenlandic news outlet Sermitsiaq, questioned the presence of Waltz, a key advisor to President Trump. “What is the security advisor doing in Greenland?”
Egede asked, suggesting the visit is a “demonstration of power” meant to further President Trump’s stated goal of annexing Greenland. Egede believes Waltz’s presence will reinforce Trump’s commitment to this objective, escalating pressure on Greenland.
This visit comes amidst President Trump’s repeated calls for the U.S. to acquire Greenland, citing national security interests. Earlier this month, Trump expressed confidence in achieving this goal.
Adding to the tension, Greenland’s political landscape is shifting. Egede’s left-wing party recently lost to the center-right Demokraatit party, which advocates for independence from Denmark.
The new party’s leader has reportedly called Trump “a threat to our political independence.”
Egede urged Greenland’s allies to move beyond quiet support and actively oppose U.S. pressure. He warned that without stronger intervention, “American aggression will increase.” He emphasized Greenland’s efforts to demonstrate how U.S. actions violate its sovereignty, characterizing the upcoming visit as a dangerous escalation.
In anticipation of the visit, Danish police have reportedly increased security measures in Greenland, a standard procedure for high-level diplomatic visits. The White House has not yet responded to requests for comment.
