Tesla Attacks a Growing Threat

Additional Coverage:

Federal authorities are warning that attacks against Tesla dealerships and vehicles are easy to execute and are likely the work of individuals acting alone. A joint FBI and Department of Homeland Security assessment, obtained by ABC News, reveals the attacks are typically occurring at night, hindering identification and apprehension of the perpetrators. This warning comes on the heels of the discovery of incendiary devices at an Austin, Texas Tesla showroom earlier this week.

The assessment, dated March 21, expresses concern that the publicity surrounding these attacks may inspire copycat incidents. While the perpetrators may view their actions as simple property crimes, officials stress the potential for accidental or intentional harm.

The bulletin also highlights the importance of collaboration between state and local law enforcement agencies in tracking down those responsible. The assessment further warns of an increased risk of injury to both civilians and first responders over the next year.

On Monday, the FBI announced a dedicated task force to investigate these attacks. The task force will include agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, as well as FBI counterterrorism agents. FBI Director Kash Patel took to social media, labeling the attacks “domestic terrorism” and vowing to bring those responsible to justice.

President Trump also weighed in on the situation, referring to the perpetrators as “terrorists,” and suggesting that those convicted could face imprisonment in El Salvador, echoing the administration’s controversial policy of deporting alleged gang members to the country.
