A Disney Diva’s Guide to Saving Some Dough

Having grown up visiting Disney World and later working there for two years, I’ve developed some strong opinions about what’s worth buying at the parks (and what’s definitely not). Here’s my take on how to avoid some classic Disney spending traps:

Skip the Bottled Water: Staying hydrated in the Florida heat is essential, but those $4 water bottles are a rip-off. Bring your own reusable bottle and refill it at the many water fountains or grab a free cup of water at most quick-service restaurants.

Popcorn Buckets? Nah: While some folks collect these seasonal buckets, I find them bulky and impractical. The discounted refills only make sense if you’re a die-hard popcorn fan and stick to the same bucket, as they cost a pretty penny upfront.

Generic Food is a No-Go: Disney World has some amazing food offerings. Why waste your money on basic cheeseburgers or chicken nuggets when you can experience unique and delicious treats elsewhere in the parks? I prioritize my favorite restaurants, Epcot festival stands, and seasonal goodies.

Spirit Jerseys are Too Pricey: I used to love these, but the price has skyrocketed. I can’t justify spending $80+ on a glorified long-sleeved t-shirt! There’s plenty of other Disney merchandise that offers more bang for your buck.

Crocs? Hard Pass: I’m just not a fan of these shoes, regardless of the Disney design.

BYORain Gear: Florida rain is predictable. Save yourself some cash by packing a poncho or umbrella instead of buying overpriced ones in the park.

Mickey Balloons are a Hassle: They’re cute, but at around $14, they’re not worth the impracticality. They’re banned from many attractions, and who wants to lug a balloon around all day?

Misting Fans: Beat the heat with a misting fan from Amazon or Walmart. They’re way cheaper than the ones sold in the parks, and you’ll have more compact options.

Prepackaged Treats: Skip the stale candy and popcorn in the gift shops. Opt for fresh treats and made-to-order desserts for a more satisfying experience.
