“SNL” Takes on White House Signal Scandal
Saturday Night Live’s latest cold open poked fun at the recent White House Signal texting scandal, imagining a scenario where top Trump officials accidentally added high schoolers to a group chat discussing military secrets.
The skit featured Mikey Madison, Sarah Sherman, and Ego Nwodim as the bewildered teenagers who suddenly found themselves privy to sensitive information. Andrew Dismukes, playing Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, blithely shared details of a Yemen raid and the locations of nuclear submarines, much to the teens’ confusion. Bowen Yang’s portrayal of JD Vance further amplified the absurdity, mimicking Vance’s recent Greenland visit and offering congratulations on the “strike, fam.”
Cameos by Marcello Hernández as Marco Rubio and Mikey Day as Jeffrey Goldberg, the editor of The Atlantic who was involved in the real-life Signal mishap, added another layer of humor. The skit highlighted the seeming nonchalance of the officials involved while satirizing the security breach itself. The real-life incident has sparked concern and criticism from both sides of the political aisle.
