California Wildfire Forces People to Flee

A wildfire near Bishop, California exploded to 1,000 acres Sunday afternoon, triggering evacuations in Inyo and Mono counties and shutting down a portion of Highway 6. Dubbed the Silver Fire, the blaze began around 2 p.m.

PT near the intersection of Highway 6 and Silver Canyon Road. Fanned by strong winds gusting up to 35 mph, the fire quickly jumped the highway, threatening structures and power lines.

As of 8 p.m. PT Sunday, the fire remained uncontained.

Firefighting efforts have been hampered by the extreme wind conditions, which even grounded some aircraft due to turbulence. While no injuries have been reported, the National Weather Service warns that high winds are expected to continue through Monday evening, potentially exacerbating the situation.
