Fayetteville, NC – A retired Green Beret’s wife has been arrested and charged with his murder. Shana Cloud faces charges of first-degree murder and concealment of death in connection with the disappearance of her husband, Clinton Bonnell, 50.

Bonnell, a student in Methodist University’s physician assistant program, was reported missing on January 28th after failing to attend class. A university employee requested a wellness check at Bonnell’s Fayetteville residence, where deputies spoke with Cloud.

She claimed she hadn’t seen Bonnell since the previous day. Authorities found Bonnell’s vehicle, school bag, and other belongings at the home.

A missing person’s case was opened later that day after a friend also requested a wellness check.

An extensive investigation ensued, involving multiple search warrants executed in North Carolina and Virginia, focusing on Cloud’s vehicle, properties, phone, and digital data. This allowed investigators to construct a timeline of events leading up to and following Bonnell’s disappearance.

On Tuesday, March 28th, the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office received a call regarding human remains discovered in a Fayetteville body of water. DNA testing subsequently confirmed the remains were those of Clinton Bonnell. Cloud was arrested without incident at her residence and is scheduled for her first court appearance on Monday.

The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office offered condolences to Bonnell’s family, the Special Forces community, and Methodist University, requesting privacy and mindful social media commentary. Methodist University President Stanley T.

Wearden also issued a statement expressing sympathy and offering support to the university community. He echoed the Sheriff’s office’s call for sensitivity and respect for Bonnell’s loved ones.
