Social Security Recipients: Mark Your Calendars for April Payments
The Social Security Administration (SSA) has announced its payment schedule for April 2025. As usual, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits will be paid on the first of the month, unless the first falls on a weekend or holiday, in which case payments will be distributed on the preceding Friday. Social Security payments are scheduled according to the recipient’s birth date:
- April 9th: Beneficiaries born between the 1st and 10th.
- April 16th: Beneficiaries born between the 11th and 20th.
- April 23rd: Beneficiaries born between the 21st and 31st.
Recent Scrutiny of Social Security Records Sparks Controversy
Recent actions by Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) have fueled controversy surrounding Social Security. DOGE has cross-referenced Social Security records and identified millions of records associated with individuals purportedly over the age of 120.
The agency has already updated the status of approximately seven million of these records to “deceased” and plans to update roughly five million more. Musk has been a vocal critic of the SSA, alleging widespread fraud and inefficiencies, even labeling the system a “Ponzi scheme.”
He has also called for the disenrollment of foreign-born beneficiaries.
Acting Social Security Commissioner Lee Dudek has refuted Musk’s claims, explaining that the records in question belong to individuals with Social Security numbers but no recorded date of death. Dudek clarified that these individuals are not necessarily receiving benefits.
The SSA recently announced stricter identity-proofing measures, requiring many recipients and applicants to appear in person at field offices. This move follows concerns about potential fraud within the system.
