Celebrity Space Trip Sparks Debate
The upcoming Blue Origin space flight featuring Gayle King, Katy Perry, and other prominent women has generated controversy. While the crew has expressed excitement and a desire to inspire, critics question the mission’s purpose and cost.
On NBC’s Today with Jenna & Friends, actress Olivia Munn voiced her concerns, questioning the necessity of the trip and its impact. “There are so many things that are so important in the world right now,” Munn stated, highlighting the expense of space travel compared to basic necessities like affordable food.
She also questioned the scientific value of the mission, asking what the crew would be doing to “make things better for humankind on Earth.” Munn characterized the trip as “gluttonous,” likening the brief experience of weightlessness to a theme park ride.
While Munn expressed skepticism, King and her crewmates have stated their goal is to inspire others through their journey. The mission, Blue Origin NS-31, is scheduled for April 14th and includes civil rights activist Amanda Nguyen, aerospace engineer Aisha Bowe, and filmmaker Kerianne Flynn, in addition to King, Perry, and author Lauren Sanchez. CBS Mornings will cover the launch.
