Pope Francis made his first public appearance since his recent hospitalization, attending a Jubilee Mass at the Vatican on Sunday. The 86-year-old pontiff, who was hospitalized for pneumonia in late March, appeared to be in good spirits as he was wheeled through St. Peter’s Square, waving and shaking hands with the assembled crowd.
Although wearing nasal tubes, the Pope addressed the attendees, offering a “Good Sunday” greeting and a prayer for healthcare workers, acknowledging the difficult conditions they sometimes face and emphasizing the need for support and respect for their vital mission.
This marked his first public appearance since March 23rd, when he briefly addressed well-wishers from his hospital balcony. His recent health scare, initially attributed to bronchitis, later developed into pneumonia, requiring a 38-day hospital stay.
Dr. Sergio Alfieri, head of the Pope’s medical team, revealed the seriousness of the situation, stating that the Pope’s life had been in danger.
He also commended the pontiff’s insistence on transparency regarding his condition throughout his treatment.
Following his discharge, Pope Francis was advised to rest for at least two months.
