Gilgo Beach Killings: A Look at the Case and the Accused
Netflix’s “Gone Girls: The Long Island Serial Killer” dives into the chilling story of the Gilgo Beach murders and the man accused of the crimes, Rex Heuermann. The docuseries recounts the discovery of 11 bodies, mostly women, in the Gilgo Beach area of Long Island, New York, between 2010 and 2011. The series includes interviews with victims’ families, law enforcement, and journalists who covered the case.
The investigation began with the disappearance of Shannan Gilbert in May 2010. While searching for Gilbert, police stumbled upon the remains of four other women in December of that year. Gilbert’s body was eventually found in 2011, but her death was ruled undetermined.
The case took a significant turn in 2022 when architect Rex Heuermann was identified as a suspect. A witness reported seeing a green Chevrolet Avalanche, matching the description of Heuermann’s vehicle, near where one of the victims, Amber Costello, disappeared. Further investigation linked DNA found on burlap used to wrap some of the bodies to Heuermann’s wife, who was out of town with their children during the times of the murders.
Heuermann was arrested in July 2023 and charged with the murders of Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, and Amber Costello. He was later charged with the murders of Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Jessica Taylor, Sandra Costilla, and Valerie Mack. Heuermann has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
Currently, Heuermann is being held without bail at the Riverhead Correctional Facility in Suffolk County, New York, awaiting trial. According to Suffolk County Sheriff Dr.
Errol D. Toulon Jr., Heuermann has adjusted to prison life, spending his time reading, watching television, and making phone calls.
Sheriff Toulon emphasized the importance of ensuring justice is served through the courts.
