Orlando’s Epic Universe: A Universal Game-Changer?
Theme park enthusiasts have eagerly awaited the opening of Universal Orlando Resort’s Epic Universe since its 2019 announcement. This past weekend, I got a sneak peek, and it was worth the wait.
Epic Universe is comprised of five immersive “worlds” accessed through the Chronos, a magnificent clocktower. These worlds include Super Nintendo World, the Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic, How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk, Dark Universe, and Celestial Park. The park is a marvel of design and engineering, reportedly built for around $7 billion, though Universal hasn’t officially confirmed this figure.
Each “world” offers unique experiences. The Isle of Berk, based on the “How to Train Your Dragon” franchise, features impressive animatronics and a spectacular “Untrainable Dragon” show with a flying Toothless.
Super Nintendo World is pure sensory overload, transporting visitors directly into a video game. The Ministry of Magic recreates 1920s Paris from the “Fantastic Beasts” series, while Dark Universe offers spooky delights with classic Universal monsters.
Celestial Park, the park’s central hub, connects the other four worlds.
Several rides stand out. Stardust Racers, a dueling coaster in Celestial Park, reaches speeds of 62 mph.
However, the best overall ride is Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment, a dark ride featuring incredibly lifelike animatronics of classic monsters. A close second is the Battle at the Ministry of Magic, with a stunning pre-show and immersive ride experience rivalling some of Disney’s best.
Epic Universe raises the bar for Universal Orlando, offering an immersion previously unseen in their parks. While I’ve always preferred Disney World for its theming, Epic Universe’s attention to detail and innovative attractions make it a strong competitor.
The park also boasts impressive dining options, with over 100 new menu items. The Oak and Star Tavern, for example, offers delicious barbecue in a beautiful setting.
Industry experts predict Epic Universe could attract over 6 million visitors in its first year. With single-day tickets starting at $139 for adults and $134 for children, the park offers value for families.
While it’s unlikely to dethrone Disney, Epic Universe will undoubtedly challenge Disney’s dominance in the Orlando theme park landscape.
