Senator Bernie Sanders took aim at Elon Musk and the future of work during a CNN town hall Wednesday evening. Speaking with Anderson Cooper and a live audience of Democrats, Republicans, and Independents, the Vermont Independent warned about the potential impact of artificial intelligence and robotics on American jobs.

Sanders expressed concern over the perceived disregard of workers by figures like Musk, referencing an unspecified incident involving federal employees. “If Musk can do this to federal employees… what do you think he’s going to be doing when artificial intelligence and robotics comes for your job?”

Sanders asked. He painted a bleak picture of the future, suggesting many current jobs will be gone in 10 to 15 years, and claimed figures like Musk aren’t concerned about protecting workers.

The senator also used the platform to reiterate his call for a stronger Democratic response to President Trump’s policies, focusing on issues like income inequality, climate change, and healthcare access. He highlighted his ongoing “Fighting Oligarchy” tour with Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez as part of this effort. Sanders emphasized the need to challenge corporate influence in politics, stating, “We have to take on the corporate interests that are controlling our political system.”

The town hall appearance comes as calls grow for a more unified Democratic front against the president. Sanders, a prominent voice in the progressive wing, stressed the importance of expanding the party’s base, particularly in Republican-leaning areas, a goal of his recent tour.

He also addressed questions about the feasibility of proposals like the Green New Deal and Medicare for All, defending them as necessary to tackle systemic economic and healthcare issues. “We’re not going to get things done by simply playing it safe,” Sanders asserted. “We need bold action to create a fairer, more just society for all Americans.”
