Eagle Rock, CA—Author Jillian Lauren, wife of Weezer bassist Scott Shriner, was shot by police and charged with attempted murder following a bizarre series of events stemming from a hit-and-run incident on Tuesday.
Police were pursuing three suspects who fled the scene of a car accident when one of them reportedly ended up on Lauren’s street. The 51-year-old author, known for her memoirs and true crime writing, confronted the suspect, allegedly opening fire after he attempted to enter her property.
According to an LAPD press release, Lauren was then seen holding a firearm and refused to comply with officers’ repeated demands to drop it. The situation escalated when she allegedly pointed the handgun at officers, who subsequently shot her in the shoulder. The incident occurred in the backyard of Lauren’s home in the Eagle Rock neighborhood.
Following the shooting, Lauren retreated into her house for approximately 30 minutes before emerging with her babysitter and surrendering to authorities. Both women were taken into custody, and Lauren received treatment for non-life-threatening injuries at a local hospital. A nine-millimeter handgun was recovered from her residence.
Meanwhile, the alleged hit-and-run driver was apprehended shortly after the incident, found in the backyard of a nearby home wearing only his boxer shorts. News helicopters captured footage of the suspect shedding his clothes, taking a dip in a pool, and even watering plants, seemingly in an attempt to evade capture. The other two suspects remain at large.
Lauren, also known as Jillian Shriner, is the author of several books, including the memoir Some Girls: My Life in a Harem and the true crime book Behold the Monster: Facing America’s Most Prolific Serial Killer. She married Scott Shriner in 2005.
Weezer, known for hits like “Buddy Holly” and “Hash Pipe,” was recently added to the Coachella music festival lineup. It is currently unclear whether Lauren’s arrest will impact the band’s scheduled performance.
