Harry Fights for Taxpayer-Funded Security in UK Court

Prince Harry briefly returned to the U.K. to attend a two-day court hearing concerning the removal of his private security. The prince lost his taxpayer-funded police protection after he and his wife, Meghan Markle, stepped down from their royal duties in 2020. A decision made by the Executive Committee for the Protection of Royalty and Public Figures (RAVEC), the removal prompted Harry to launch a legal challenge in 2021, arguing he and his family continue to face substantial security threats.

During the hearing at the Royal Courts of Justice in London, Harry’s lawyer, Shaheed Fatima KC, made an impassioned plea to the court. “One must not forget the human dimension of this case,” Fatima stated.

“There is a person sitting behind me whose safety, whose security and whose life is at stake.” Fatima stressed that Harry felt he was subject to an inferior process despite his willingness to personally fund his security.

She argued he was unfairly treated compared to others in similar situations, emphasizing that he remains a member of the royal family and faces legitimate security risks.

Fatima highlighted Harry’s commitment to the case, stating, “His presence here and throughout this appeal is a potent demonstration of how much this appeal means to him and his family.” While the hearing concluded with both sides presenting their arguments, the court has yet to issue a ruling. The decision remains pending.
