Frozen Breakfast Sandwich Showdown: One Local Journalist’s Quest for the Perfect Morning Bite
Finding a quick, tasty, and filling breakfast can be tough. So, I embarked on a culinary quest, sampling various frozen sausage breakfast sandwiches to determine which one reigns supreme.
My contenders included offerings from Aldi, Jimmy Dean, Odom’s Tennessee Pride, and Swaggerty’s Farm. Each sandwich was microwaved according to package directions and consumed at breakfast time to accurately gauge its morning fuel potential.
Here’s my ranking, from least favorite to top pick:
Aldi’s Breakfast Best: These inexpensive biscuit sandwiches, priced at around $1.15 each, unfortunately, fell flat. Microwaving proved disastrous, resulting in a hard biscuit, crunchy cheese bits, and pockets of cold sausage.
While filling, I’d prefer scrambling my own eggs and sausage next time. Perhaps oven-cooking would yield better results.
Jimmy Dean Delights Egg’wiches: These unique sandwiches swap bread for mini frittatas made with bacon, spinach, caramelized onion, Parmesan, turkey sausage, and cheese. At $2 each, they offered a gourmet touch.
The egg “buns” provided a garlicky kick and substantial filling without feeling heavy. Microwaving worked perfectly, delivering a flavorful, higher-quality experience.
Odom’s Tennessee Pride: These mini biscuit sandwiches, containing just sausage and biscuit, surprised me with their delicious simplicity. At roughly $1.05 per serving, they’re a budget-friendly option. The smaller size allowed for quick cooking, making them ideal for busy mornings or families with kids.
Swaggerty’s Farm: This sausage, egg, and cheese muffin took the crown. At $2 apiece, it tied with the Jimmy Dean Egg’wich for the priciest option, but the quality justified the cost.
The flavorful sausage boasted a pleasant spice, the English muffin reheated to soft perfection, and the cheese melted beautifully. It was the largest and most satisfying sandwich of the bunch, keeping hunger at bay until lunchtime.
