“A Minecraft Movie” Dominates Box Office, Leaving Competitors in the Dust

After only two weeks in theaters, “A Minecraft Movie” has exploded onto the scene, becoming the highest-grossing film of 2025. The Warner Bros. adaptation of the popular video game raked in another $80.6 million in its second weekend, bringing its global total to over $550 million. This impressive performance follows a stellar opening weekend that doubled initial projections.

Directed by Jared Hess and featuring the voices of Jack Black and Jason Momoa, the film continues to attract large audiences despite lukewarm critical reviews and a “B+” CinemaScore. The success of “A Minecraft Movie” underscores the growing trend of successful video game adaptations at the box office. The film’s strong performance has also provided a much-needed boost to the movie industry after a slow start to the year, with overall ticket sales now on par with 2024.

Several new releases attempted to challenge “A Minecraft Movie”‘s dominance, but none came close. Angel Studios’ “The King of Kings,” an animated retelling of Jesus’ life, secured the second spot with $19.1 million. The film boasts a star-studded voice cast, including Oscar Isaac, Kenneth Branagh, and Uma Thurman, and received an “A+” CinemaScore, suggesting strong word-of-mouth potential leading into Easter.

Other notable releases included “The Amateur,” a CIA thriller starring Rami Malek, which earned $15 million domestically; “Warfare,” a critically acclaimed war film directed by Alex Garland, which opened to $8.3 million; and “Drop,” a Blumhouse thriller starring Meghann Fahy, which debuted with $7.5 million. None of these films, however, posed a significant threat to the box office reign of “A Minecraft Movie.”
