Harrisburg, PA – A suspect is in custody following a shocking arson attack on the Pennsylvania Governor’s Mansion early Sunday morning. The incident occurred around 2:00 a.m. while Governor Josh Shapiro, his family, and staff were asleep inside.
Authorities identified the suspect as 38-year-old Cody Balmer. According to Pennsylvania State Police Lt.
Col. George Bivens, Balmer faces multiple charges, including attempted murder, terrorism, aggravated arson, and aggravated assault against an enumerated person.
Lt. Col.
Bivens revealed that Balmer breached the perimeter fence, evaded state troopers guarding the residence, and then ignited the fire using “homemade incendiary devices.” The rapid response of law enforcement prevented further damage and ensured the safety of everyone inside.
In an emotional press conference Sunday evening, Governor Shapiro condemned the violence. “This kind of violence is becoming far too common in our society,” he stated.
“It’s not okay and it has to stop. We have to be better than this.”
The Governor expressed gratitude to the state police and first responders for their swift action.
Earlier, Governor Shapiro posted on social media that he and his family were awakened by the police alerting them to the fire. He confirmed that everyone was safe and thanked the first responders for their bravery.
The fire caused significant damage to a portion of the residence. While the investigation is ongoing, authorities have confirmed the incident was arson. Prior to Balmer’s arrest, a $10,000 reward had been offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible.
Both the Pennsylvania Republican Party Chairman Greg Rothman and the National Governors Association released statements condemning the attack and expressing support for the Shapiro family. They emphasized the need for swift justice and a rejection of violence in society.
