- IRS extends April 15 tax deadline for Florida and at least 8 other states. See the list. (nbcnews.com)
Tax Day is just around the corner, but for some, the deadline is a bit further away. Several states have been granted automatic extensions due to natural disasters in 2024 and 2025. While most taxpayers have until April 15, 2025, to file their 2024 returns, residents of certain areas have been given later deadlines.
Nine states have been granted an automatic extension to May 1, 2025. This includes all residents of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina, all of which were impacted by Hurricane Helene. Parts of other states are also included in this May 1st extension: Juneau, Alaska (flooding); Chaves County, New Mexico (severe storms and flooding); and specific counties in Tennessee and Virginia (Hurricane Helene).
Even later deadlines apply to other disaster-stricken areas. Los Angeles County, California, devastated by wildfires in January 2025, has until October 15, 2025. Kentucky and several counties in West Virginia, impacted by severe storms and flooding in February 2025, have until November 3, 2025, to file.
These extensions offer relief to those whose lives were disrupted by natural disasters. The IRS encourages taxpayers to check their website for a complete list of affected areas and details regarding these extensions.
