Celebrities Clash Over All-Female Blue Origin Space Mission

An all-female crew blasted off aboard a Blue Origin rocket on Monday, marking a historic moment in space travel. The crew included singer Katy Perry, journalist Lauren Sanchez, TV host Gayle King, film producer Kerianne Flynn, NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, and civil rights activist and research scientist Amanda Nguyen. However, the mission sparked a wave of criticism from other celebrities concerned about the cost and resource allocation of such endeavors.

Actresses Olivia Wilde and Olivia Munn, model Emily Ratajkowski, and comedian Amy Schumer all voiced their disapproval. Wilde shared a meme of Perry exiting the spacecraft with the caption, “Getting off a commercial flight in 2025,” and commented, “Billion dollars bought some good memes I guess.”

Munn called the mission “gluttonous,” questioning its purpose and highlighting the vast sums of money involved. Ratajkowski expressed disgust, arguing that the resources used could have been better allocated given the current state of the world.

Schumer took a more humorous approach, posting a video jokingly claiming she was a last-minute addition to the crew.

Adding fuel to the fire, singer Kesha appeared to subtly jab at Perry, with whom she has a history of conflict, by sharing a selfie with a Wendy’s drink shortly after the fast-food chain tweeted, “Can we send her back?” in response to news of Perry’s return from space.

The underlying tension stems from a past lawsuit Kesha filed against music producer Dr. Luke, whom Perry continues to work with.

Crew members defended the mission. King emphasized the positive impact it has on young women and girls, while Sanchez invited critics to visit Blue Origin and witness the dedication of the employees firsthand. Several celebrities, including Oprah Winfrey, Orlando Bloom, Kris Jenner, and Khloé Kardashian, publicly supported the all-female crew and their historic journey.
