Chester County, SC—A devastating school bus accident on Interstate 77 claimed the life of a 13-year-old Pine Ridge Middle School student Thursday afternoon.
The bus, carrying approximately 35 eighth-grade students and two adults back from a field trip near Charlotte, NC, blew a tire, left the roadway, struck a guardrail, and overturned. The accident occurred around 1:47 p.m. in the southbound lane of I-77.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene, transporting the injured to area hospitals. Chester County Coroner Terry Tinker confirmed the death of the 13-year-old.
The Chester County Sheriff’s Office reported multiple injuries, but the exact number and severity remain unknown at this time. Two other buses accompanying the field trip were able to avoid the accident.
Lexington School District Two officials confirmed that a total of roughly 35 students and four adults from the three buses were transported for medical evaluations.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the crash. Gov. Henry McMaster offered condolences and prayers for the victim’s family, the injured, and the entire Lexington Two community.
