Venice to Reinstate Tourist Entry Fee

Venice, Italy – Starting this Friday, the famed canal city of Venice will once again implement a tourist entry fee for day-trippers. The fee, set at $5.69 per person, is designed to manage the overwhelming influx of visitors, particularly during peak periods. Procrastinators beware: those purchasing entry within three days of their arrival will pay double.

This isn’t Venice’s first attempt at using a fee system. A similar trial run last year, while not impacting visitor numbers, generated $2.73 million in revenue for the city. Officials hope that this renewed effort will encourage longer stays and a more immersive experience for tourists.

“Our aim is to promote quality tourism,” explained Venice tourism councillor Simone Venturini. “We want visitors who appreciate the city’s unique charm and choose to stay longer, rather than just passing through.”

The fee will only apply to day trips on 29 specific days in 2025, including the Good Friday period and 12 weekends throughout the year. Visitors booking overnight accommodations, city residents, students, and workers are exempt, as are residents of the Veneto region and European Disability Card holders. With approximately 30 million tourists visiting annually – 70% of whom are day-trippers – the city hopes this targeted approach will create a more sustainable and enjoyable experience for all.
