Oklahoma Flooding Turns Deadly

Additional Coverage:

Severe storms and flooding claimed two lives in Oklahoma over Easter weekend, as dangerous weather continued to threaten millions across the southern and midwestern United States. A woman and a 12-year-old boy tragically died Saturday night in Moore, Oklahoma, a suburb of Oklahoma City, after their vehicle was swept away by floodwaters.

They were among the occupants of a dozen vehicles caught in rising waters. While others were rescued, the woman and child were later found dead.

Moore Police described the event as “a historical weather event,” expressing gratitude to neighboring agencies for their assistance in rescue efforts. Dramatic video footage showed emergency responders battling the swift current to reach the submerged truck. Multiple water rescues were conducted throughout Moore as floodwaters inundated roads and neighborhoods.

The severe weather system stretched from East Texas to Iowa and Illinois, bringing with it the threat of tornadoes, flooding, damaging winds, and large hail. Tornado watches were issued for parts of Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas, and Missouri. In Montague County, Texas, boat crews were deployed to rescue residents from flooded areas.

Forecasters predict the severe weather will subside by Monday.
